Ryan Toms made his professional debut on the 2009 Father's Day show at York Hall. Ryan initially had a promising career as a footballer. He was a youth player for QPR and Charlton until he broke his leg. He then served five-and-a-half years in the army (Princess of Wales Regiment), serving in Bosnia, Northern Ireland and several other countries. When he left the army he joined the Hayes Amateur Boxing Club and after a successful first season turned professional with manager Dave Currivan.
